WHAT IS ROTARY?
Rotary International, the world’s first service club organization, is made up of over 32,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas. Its members form a global network of business and professional leaders who volunteer their time and talents to serve their communities and the world. Rotary’s motto, Service Above Self, exemplifies the humanitarian spirit of the organization’s more than 1.2 million members. Strong fellowship among Rotarians and meaningful community and international service projects characterize Rotary worldwide. Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland (RIBI) has over 55,000 members in 1,855 clubs.
Rotary is essentially a grassroots organisation, with most of its meaningful work being carried out at club level. The district, national and international structure is designed to support the clubs and help them provide quality service on a wider basis.
As a large and diverse organisation, Rotary provides individuals with the power to help those in need. There are countless opportunities to make a difference to those less fortunate than ourselves. Through Rotary, service to local and overseas communities is well organised and rewarding.
Rotary members are dedicated people, men and women from business and professions, who share a common interest in helping others. By combining their skills and resources, members of Rotary are able to make a real contribution to the lives of others.
In local communities alone, each club raises tens of thousands of pounds for community projects and local charities, often more. Members also volunteer their time - supervising community events, running a host of projects aimed at promoting the achievements of young people, coordinating educational programmes, and supporting local businesses
Because Rotary is found in more than 200 countries and regions worldwide, we are in the unique position of being able to reach people in need all over the planet, from running life-changing projects in developing countries to making an immediate response to disaster-hit regions.
